New security screening at Budapest Airport – what does it mean for you?

If you're flying from Budapest Airport soon, you'll meet a welcome change: security screening has become faster and smoother. We've gathered exactly what changed and, most importantly, what it means for planning your departure.

What exactly changed?

Airport operator VINCI Airports has completely rebuilt the Terminal 2 security checkpoints as part of its "NextGen Security" development programme. The goal is to reduce congestion and speed up passenger flow.

• Four new high-capacity lanes each on the A and B sides, with an automatic tray-return system.
• Separate preparation zones were created, where you can calmly take out your coat, belt and liquids before screening.
• Tray handling and scanning are faster, and the checkpoints have higher throughput.
• In tests, passing through can drop below a minute in some cases.

VINCI carried out the upgrade together with specialists from Edinburgh and London Gatwick airports, and intends to use the solution rolled out in Budapest as a model at its other European airports in the future.

What does it mean for you as a departing passenger?

Faster security screening is good news – less stress in the queue, a smoother departure. But it's important to keep it in perspective: security is just one stage in the departure process.

Your time at the airport is still affected by check-in and bag drop, possible peak-time queues, getting to the gate, and how long it takes to reach the airport in the first place. A faster checkpoint is no excuse to skip good planning.

How to plan even with faster screening

A few simple principles to make your departure truly stress-free – no matter how fast screening happens to be:

• Keep your usual buffer time. Faster screening is a bonus, not an excuse to rush.
• Be ready for the new preparation zone: keep liquids, electronics and your coat easy to reach in your bag.
• Plan parking and the shuttle too. You still need to reach the airport on time – your arrival time matters just as much.

If you're flying from Budapest Airport, parking is one of the first steps of your departure – and exactly where you can gain peace of mind.
